(1998, Virgin)

As a dyed-in-the-wool Pumpkins fan, the kind who wore out their VHS copy of Vieuphoria, the release of Adore in 1998 was a crushing disappointment. I hated it, and I wasn’t alone in doing so.

But the intervening years have been more than kind to this album, arguably the last great thing that Corgan ever did. Tragic, earnest, brutally emotional, it’s weathered the storms of time pretty well.

READ: We’re clearly not alone in looking back on this album with fresh eyes, as evidenced by this excellent Longreads piece. If that’s a bit much for you, this Stereogum review has you covered with a bit more brevity.

WATCH: At the time, even though I hated the album, I really enjoyed the Later performance with three tracks off the album, thankfully captured here with minimal Jools banter
