The redemptive narrative of Cash’s comeback has been somewhat overblown since his death – it wasn’t like Cash wasn’t still successfully touring in the late 80s and early 90s. But Rubin’s stripped-back capture of Cash’s essence on this and the subsequent four follow-ups certainly breathed new life into the great man’s career.
