When the catchy ‘Novocaine For The Soul’ hit MTV and didn’t leave for months, I’ll admit that I pegged them as fitting into the Whale/Cake bracket of ‘great song, shame we’ll never hear from them again’. That lasted about as long as it took to hear the rest of Beautiful Freak, which marked out E as a songwriter every bit as talented as Beck. Even with some very ‘of its time’ production, it still stands up well after all these years.
